Lumberton man struck by van, dies

LUMBERTON - A man was killed Friday night while walking on the side of N.C. 211 near the Bladen County line, the Highway Patrol said Monday.

Richard Alan Berger, 51, of 8546 Highway N.C. 211 E. in Lumberton, was walking west about 11:09 p.m. when he was struck by a westbound Honda van driven by Penny Price Williams, 44, of 3094 White Hall Road in Whiteville, said Sgt. Freddy Johnson.

Berger, who was wearing dark-colored clothing, was walking along the side of the road in an unlit area, Johnson said.

Berger was pronounced dead at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Johnson said.

No charges will be filed, he said.
